 Adultery

Definition from Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of American English:

ADUL'TERY, n. [L. adulterium. See Adulterate.]

1. Violation of the marriage bed; a crime, or a civil injury, which introduces, or may introduce, into a family, a spurious offspring.

By the laws of Connecticut, the sexual intercourse of any man, with a married woman, is the crime of adultery in both: such intercourse of a married man, with an unmarried woman, is fornication in both, and adultery of the man, within the meaning of the law respecting divorce; but not a felonious adultery in either, or the crime of adultery at common law, or by statute. This latter offense is, in England, proceeded with only in the ecclesiastical courts.

In common usage, adultery means the unfaithfulness of any married person to the marriage bed. In England, Parliament grant absolute divorces for infidelity to the marriage bed in either party; and the spiritual courts divorce a mensa et thoro.

2. In a scriptural sense, all manner of lewdness or unchastity, as in the seventh commandment.

3. In scripture, idolatry, or apostasy from the true God. Jer 3.

4. In old laws, the fine and penalty imposed for the offense of adultery.

5. In ecclesiastical affairs, the intrusion of a person into a bishopric, during the life of the bishop.

6. Among ancient naturalists, the grafting of trees was called adultery, being considered as an unnatural union.

Adultery can destroy a marriage.  Many people feel that there is nothing wrong with having sex with someone besides your spouse.  Well guess what you may feel that there is nothing wrong with sex with someone besides your spouse but God does.  Please read the following verses in red from God's Word for the Nations Bible and in blue from the Analytical-Literal Translation:

Exo 20:14  "Never commit adultery.

Lev 20:10  "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife or with his neighbor's wife, both he and the woman must be put to death for their adultery.

Deu 5:18  "Never commit adultery.

Pro 6:32  Whoever commits adultery with a woman has no sense. Whoever does this destroys himself.

Pro 30:20  This is the way of a woman who commits adultery: She eats, wipes her mouth, and says, "I haven't done anything wrong!"

Jer 29:23  They have done shameful things in Israel. They committed adultery with their neighbors' wives and spoke lies in my name. I didn't command them to do this. I know what they have done. I'm a witness, declares the LORD.

Mat 5:27  "You heard that it was said: 'You will not commit adultery.' [Exod 20:14; Deut 5:18]

Mat 5:28  "But I say to you, every [one] looking on a woman in order to lust after her already committed adultery [with] her in his heart.

Committing adultery even in your heart by looking at someone walking by, you have broken God's holy law and are guilty before him.  If you have not repented of this breaking of the law you are subject to judgment by God. If you want to take your chances with God, then continue to be unrepentant and doing things your way. Because God will judge you no matter how unfair you think it is, he will decide your ultimate fate based on where you are in relationship to him.  If you have asked for forgiveness then Jesus will be your defense before God. God will pardon your lawlessness and you will be admitted into heaven.  If you do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ and therefore with God then you will cause yourself to be committed the flames and punishment of Hell.  Just remember God did not put you in Hell, you put yourself there.  God made Hell for Satan and his demons, not for man.  But since man decided to break God's perfect law then all will be judged against that law whether you believe in God or not. One last comment I would like to make about adultery is this;

It must be a pretty big deal if the penalty in Old Testament times was death.  I can tell you from personal experience that adultery will not only destroy a marriage but it can destroy the children of that marriage.  My parents are divorced because of adultery.  My father decided that he needed to find a partner outside of his marriage.  He made life very difficult for my mother and I.  It took me years to get over the trauma of the divorce.  And it will effect my life FOREVER.

Before you play around in the sack with someone besides your spouse think about all of the consequences that will come about just so you can have a few moments of pleasure. Life does not revolve around you, and you are the most important teacher that your children will ever have.  What do you want them to learn?
